Harry Douglas Steps Up, Atlanta Falcons Stop Skid

H. Douglas

Dale Zanine – USA TODAY Sports

Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Harry Douglas answered the call of duty, Sunday afternoon in a 31-23 victory. With his team reeling from injuries to star route-runners Juilo Jones and Roddy White, Douglas put forth the most memorable performance of his career. The sixth-year pro victimized the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ secondary to the tune of seven receptions for 149 yards and one score.

Falcons’ fans and coaches alike have long wondered if Douglas would ever become the player that many thought possible when the franchise drafted him in the third round of the 2008 draft. Over the course of 67 NFL games coming into the bout with the Buccs, the fleet-footed flanker has shown flashes of brilliance but has been plagued by inconsistency. This was just the second time that Douglas has ever eclipsed the century mark in receiving yards and the first such effort since November 13, 2011.

Through the first five weeks of this season, although the Falcons unexpectedly struggled to a 1-4 record, Douglas appeared to be making some solid strides in comparison to previous years. As the fourth, sometimes fifth option in the aerial attack, he had managed to haul in at least four passes on three different occasions. However, the level of production displayed in Week 7 virtually came out of nowhere.

The timing of this breakout effort really could not have been more perfect. Thanks to the plethora of ailments currently hindering the roster, the Falcons and quarterback Matt Ryan were in desperate search of an extra offensive weapon. Seems they found one.
