Any hope the Houston Texans had of bouncing back after their third straight loss and claiming a division title left the room once Brian Cushing went down. The heart and soul of the Texans’ defense suffered a horrendous injury that will have severe repercussions on the team. The question now is how serious is Cushing’s injury?
Cushing reportedly has torn a ligament in the same knee that was surgically repaired last year. The fact that he was in an excruciating amount of pain and barely able to move around after the game are both bad signs. As of right now, it appears Cushing’s season is over, which could very well directly result in the same fate for Houston.
Cushing leads the Texans in total tackles (44) this season. He also has recorded one and a half sacks, one interception, one forced fumble and defended two passes. Not to mention, he also has been one of the reasons Houston has the top ranked pass defense in the league due to his ability to apply pressure as well as drop into coverage.
The fact is Cushing is not just one of the best defensive players on the team. He is the emotional leader who fires up everyone else around him. Not having him on the field on game day is going to mess with the rest of the defenders. I understand they are professionals and will be able to move on. However, it will still be hard to get past not having Cushing in the middle.
The Texans will make announcement sometime on Monday regarding the results of Cushing’s injury.
