Can Philadelphia Eagles Win on Sunday with Matt Barkley?
As we watched the Nick Foles train wreck end with a concussion, the problems facing this week’s game against the New York Giants became clear. If Michael Vick is still dealing with his leg injury and Foles is out, Matt Barkley will get his first career start for the Philadelphia Eagles.
Yesterday, the team signed G.J. Kinne, a quarterback who was on the squad through training camp only to get cut before the season. Just the fact that they are willing to use roster space on Kinne tells me that Chip Kelly is not expecting either his first- or second-string guys to be healthy.
Barkley struggled in his limited game action last week. Yes, he was thrown into a tough spot, but this is a kid who started every game since high school. He played in preseason and was running the scout team throughout the year so far.
He entered the game and quickly threw multiple interceptions after staring down his receivers and not being able to read disguised coverages. Now he may get his chance to lead the team on Sunday against a Giants team who just scored their first win.
The only way that Barkley leaves Lincoln Financial Field with a win is if LeSean McCoy and DeSean Jackson step up to help him out. You can’t leave the game in his hands — not at this point. The Giants are a bad team, but a rookie quarterback can be the great equalizer, and Barkley is no Andrew Luck.
The Eagles can win this game, but Barkley needs to play better and show that he was worth a fourth-round pick that could have easily been spent on much-needed defensive help. This is his game to shine and to give the Eagles a valuable home victory to finally break the curse that has settled on the Linc.
