5 Players The Indianapolis Colts Should Call About By The NFL Trade Deadline
The Indianapolis Colts have built on their turnaround success from last year and find themselves at the top of the AFC as we head towards the halfway point of the season and the trade deadline. Andrew Luck has been even better this year, throwing his name in the ring as one of the elite quarterbacks in the NFL. But despite all of their success, a few key injuries have left them with big question marks.
The most glaring of the injuries is the loss of wide receiver Reggie Wayne for the rest of the season. Wayne has been the favorite target of Luck so far in his young career. T.Y. Hilton will need to step up, but he’s a slot guy who is dependent on the way a defense chooses to play him. The Colts may want to look at one of the receivers on this list; all of whom play on the outside and have shown the ability to take over games.
The Colts have also struggled at tight end. The good offenses in the league find ways to get receiving tight ends in mismatches that they can take care of. Colby Fleener is coming along, but the injury to Dwayne Allen has left them missing options at the tight end spot.
So far, it has been another good season for the Colts. Last season, they snuck into the playoffs and were quickly sent home. If they want to find themselves deeper in the playoffs this year, they should be calling teams to inquire about these five players.
5. Tony Gonzalez
Tony Gonzalez only came back for the 2013 season to have a shot at capping off his Hall-of-Fame career with a Super Bowl win. The Atlanta Falcons won't get there, but sending him to Indy might finally get him his title.
4. Osi Umenyiora
If you're going to contend for a title, you just can't have enough pass-rushers. Osi Umenyiora already has four sacks on the year, and he would be a great addition to a defense that thrives on teams passing to keep up with the Colts' offense.
3. Hakeem Nicks
Now we get to the Colts' biggest need — wide receiver. Hakeem Nicks is a physical receiver that can make plays down the field. The New York Giants aren't going anywhere this year, so Indy should call and see if they might sell low on him.
2. Larry Fitzgerald
It seems like the Arizona Cardinals are always trying to find a way to build a winner around All-Pro receiver Larry Fitzgerald. So far, that hasn't worked. Both the team and the player could use a change of scenery at this point.
1. Josh Gordon
Josh Gordon has been rumored to be on the trading block since he came off his suspension and looked really good. The Cleveland Browns are back to being an AFC doormat, so it's time for the Colts to see what it would take to get his game-changing ability on their side.
