New England Patriots At The Trade Deadline
As we enter Week 8, the New England Patriots are set to take on the Miami Dolphins. The Patriots are coming off of a tough OT loss that had a lot of controversy surrounding it, but in all reality the Patriots played a poor game and did not deserve to win. There has been a lack of consistency on the offensive side of the ball, and a slew of injuries on the defense. The trade deadline is four days away and the question is, will the Patriots be calling around trying to make a move?
Though there has been more trades this year than in years past, the trade deadline in the NFL is usually a lot quieter than the deadline in other sports like baseball. The Patriots made a move at the deadline last year when they brought in Aqib Talib from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for a fourth round pick. If there is a similar move out there this season, the Patriots will probably make a move.
With the inconsistencies on offense, there are many people calling for a trade of a receiver, as there are some big names that are rumored to be available. But with all the injuries on defensive side of the ball, the bigger need is at DT or inside LB for the Patriots.
While most fans may want the Patriots to bring in a sexy name like Hakeem Nicks, Justin Blackmon or Josh Gordon, I see the Patriots more likely going after a player like Jacksonville Jaguars LB Paul Posluszny to help fill the void of Jerod Mayo. Posluszny is in his seventh year in the league and has been a solid player regardless of the fact that he has always played on bad teams in the Buffalo Bills and Jaguars.
If the Patriots could give up a fourth- or fifth-round pick for Posluszny, they might do it. A lot more players are set to be available than in years past, which may make for an interesting trade deadline, which would be good for the NFL. The Patriots do need to improve on offense, but most likely will ride it out unless there is a low risk high reward option out there.
The focal point if they were to make a trade would have to be on defense, but unlike baseball, it is a lot more difficult to plug a player into a new system halfway through the season. This is something to keep an eye on over the next four days, but nothing to get too excited about. The chances of the Patriots bringing in a stud WR is low and will most likely bring some criticism, but if there is a lesser move that can help the defense, they may consider it.
