5 Keys To Victory For Philadelphia Eagles vs. New York Giants
The Philadelphia Eagles are fresh off a devastating 17-3 divisional loss at home to the Dallas Cowboys and are looking to bounce back against the New York Giants. The last time these two teams squared off, it turned into a pretty one-sided affair, even with Michael Vick getting injured and Nick Foles being thrust into action.
The Eagles don't just need a win in the worst way, they need a home win in the very worst of ways. They have lost nine straight games at Lincoln Financial Field. Let that sink in for a minute. The Linc, and before that Veteran's Stadium, used to be a place players feared to come into, a home field advantage of the highest order. Not anymore.
The last time the Eagles won a home game was September of last year against, of all teams, the New York Giants. It is only fitting the streak ends at their hands as well. The Giants are simply a bad football team. They may have beaten the lowly Minnesota Vikings, but they didn't look good doing it, that's for sure. They had to sign Peyton Hillis off the streets, and he is now their starting running back. That is how many injuries have mounted at the tail back position.
If the Eagles don't win this game at home, they can pretty much kiss their season goodbye. The home losing streak has to be snapped this week against a below average football team. Michael Vick will be back as the starting quarterback and his return couldn't come soon enough. The Eagles have a chance to effectively end the Giants' season on Sunday. This is also a big game to keep their own divisional and playoff hopes alive.
Let's take a look at five keys to victory for the Philadelphia Eagles against the New York Giants.
The Eagles Need To Pressure Eli Manning
The Eagles must pressure Eli Manning and affect his throws; the defensive front seven hasn't done enough of that this season. It needs to happen Sunday in a must win situation.
The Eagles' Offensive Line Needs To Protect Michael Vick
The offensive line has to do a better job at protecting the quarterback. Last week was a joke. The Dallas Cowboys were getting consistent pressure without their best pass rusher in DeMarcus Ware. This has to be fixed, and quick. Michael Vick will be playing at less than 100 percent gutting it out, so the line must do their job if the Eagles are to win this divisional tilt.
The Eagles' Running Game Needs To Get Going
The Eagles' running game was useless the first time these two teams played, and this needs to change Sunday. LeSean McCoy can't be held in check again against a below average Giants defense. He needs to take advantage of this matchup.
The Eagles' Defense Needs To Contain Victor Cruz
The Eagles must take away the Giants No. 1 offensive option, Victor Cruz. He is extremely dangerous, both in the intermediate and deep passing game. If the Eagles take Cruz away, they have a really good chance at containing the Giants' offense.
Michael Vick Needs To Be At His Best For The Eagles
Michael Vick is just coming off an injury to start. He won't be 100 percent and will tough it out. Regardless, he needs to be at his best, especially in the passing game. Vick killed the Giants with his legs in their first meeting. I don't see this happening Sunday, however, based on the fact that he is still a bit hobbled. Vick needs to be sharp in the pocket with his throws for the Eagles to pull out the must win Sunday afternoon.
