New York Jets’ Strategy to Cover the Great A.J. Green: “Pray”
The Jets are at 4-3 and feeling pretty confident under head coach Rex Ryan, whom management continuously assures us they believe in — we’ll see about that one at the end of the year. Rookie quarterback Geno Smith has the offense believing in his magic and they continue to surprise folks around the league.
The Bengals, meanwhile, have seemed to get things under control at 5-2 and sit atop their AFC North at the moment. Quarterback Andy Dalton is playing fantastic football. Of course, it helps when you have All Pro wideout A.J. Green on your side.
Green is off to another hot start this year with 43 receptions for 619 yards and five touchdowns, looking virtually un-coverable for a second straight year. How will the Jets lock him down, or should I say, attempt to lock him down on Sunday?
Yeah, again, you read that right. Defensive coordinator Dennis Thurman said this week that his strategy for Antonio Cromartie covering Green will be to just “Put his hands on him and pray.”
“I think he’s seen everything, I’m just a taller and more physical guy, I think that’s the only thing,” Cromartie said Thursday according to NFL.com. “I think we’re almost the same height so that’s the only difference that’s going to be out there. He’s not facing a 5-11, 6-0 DB, he’s facing a 6-2.5, 6-3 DB.”
Well, good thing for Cromartie, he’s not short on confidence. We’ll see if this confidence holds up against one of the league’s best on Sunday, or if he has to give in and resort to a simple prayer before each snap.
