Philadelphia Eagles' Offense Completely Stifled As They Fall To New York Giants

Another game, another ugly day on offense for the Philadelphia Eagles. On an afternoon where the defense once again did a pretty good job of containing the New York Giants, especially in the red zone, the offense was completely ineffective in a 15-7 loss.

Michael Vick looked out of sorts from the beginning of the game. He was spelled by rookie quarterback Matt Barkley early in the game. Barkley certainly moved the football far more efficiently than Vick, but once again, turnovers plagued the young quarterback. The turnover that really killed the Eagles was one in which Barkley drove the Eagles all the way down to the 2-yard line and then fumbled giving the ball back to the Giants.

This loss, in my mind, effectively ends the Eagles’ season and playoff hopes. For the second straight week, the offense was absolutely anemic. The only touchdown they scored came off of a Giants error in which the snap went high over the punter and the Eagles fell on the ball, running it into the end zone.

It is crystal clear to me that the Eagles need a mobile, athletic quarterback to run Chip Kelly‘s offense to full effectiveness. There were more than a handful of times when Barkley had open space  in the read option, but instead chose to hand it off to LeSean McCoy in areas where the Giants had the box stacked with defenders.

A running quarterback would have held the ball in those situations and gotten an easy first down. The loss of Eagles’ wide receiver Jeremy Maclin is also being felt more and more each week.

The Eagles are a team in a state of flux. They have now lost 10 straight at home, which is a franchise record and a disastrous statistic. It is time for Kelly, GM Howie Roseman and the rest of the front office to re-build the defense and get an infusion of young, athletic talent at the quarterback position.

Then, and only then, will the Eagles see themselves get back to their former glory.
