NFL New York Jets

New York Jets Are A .500 Team At Best

Mark Zerof-USA TODAY Sports

One of the biggest surprises in the NFL this year has to be the New York Jets. Originally picked by many sports media outlets as the worst team in the league this year, the Jets have proved the doubters wrong and are now 4-4 through eight weeks. While there are still nine weeks left this season, I believe 4-4 is the perfect indication of how the Jets’ season is going to go.

It would be an amazing story if the Jets were to make it to the playoffs as a Wild Card team, but that is simply not going to happen. The Jets are no better than a .500 team.

Want proof? This year, the Jets have yet to put together any type of consistency or a winning streak, resulting in the season being a ‘win one, lose one’ situation. Even after emotional wins at the Atlanta Falcons and home against the New England Patriots, the Jets have followed those weeks with blowout losses to the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cincinnati Bengals.

Now I am not criticizing them and saying they are a bad team, because that is not true. In fact, the Jets’ future certainly looks brighter than it did just a few months ago, and so much that it might have even saved head coach Rex Ryan‘s job for another year.

The bottom line is that the Jets are not built to win now. Their glaring weaknesses at wide receiver depth and their defensive secondary, not to mention having a rookie starting quarterback in Geno Smith and an average running game, has proved that they are just not good enough to compete against top teams on a consistent weekly basis.

The Jets have surprised many this year, but unfortunately their season will not go past December 29 as they will be around the .500 mark when it is all said and done. While many would be disappointing with that outcome, Jets fans should all be proud of the team if that indeed is the case. I mean, no one thought the Jets would even win four games all year, never mind having that many through eight weeks.
