Seattle Seahawks: What Role Will Percy Harvin Play?
Of course “soon” is an ambiguous word, and at some point there may be a disagreement as to when he should return to the field. Perhaps Harvin and Pete Carroll have already had a disagreement.
Regardless, he will return at some point. When he does, the Seahawks will need to figure out his role and how he might sync with Russell Wilson and the rest of the offense.
Harvin is going to need a bit of time to get used to the Seattle offense. He is a professional and a superb athlete. However, players in this situation do not exactly step right onto the field and instantly become the No.1 receiver.
One has to assume to Wilson will look to get him into the offense right away, but Carroll is going to be hesitant about throwing him into too many situations and risking a setback. The Seahawks need this guy to be healthy for the playoffs, not just Week 9.
Initially, Harvin may actually be a very talented decoy for a number of plays. Harvin’s very presence on the field may open up the running game for Marshawn Lynch and allow more opportunities for Sidney Rice, Golden Tate and Doug Baldwin. Sometimes the best use of the most talented guy on the field is to take attention away from the other player that is sneaking into the open space.
Perhaps there will be a Percy Harvin sighting when the Seahawks return home to play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 9. What will Harvin’s role be if he does make an appearance? No one really knows, but that mystery may work to Seattle’s advantage.
Very “soon” we will see what this guy can do.
