Can The Dallas Cowboys Contain Adrian Peterson?

When the Dallas Cowboys take on the Minnesota Vikings this Sunday, all eyes will be on Viking’s running back Adrian Peterson. The Cowboys will face the leagues 17th ranked rushing attack Sunday, and with a defensive line that is reeling from injuries, it is going to take a collective group effort for them to slow the Peterson down. After last week’s heartbreaking loss to the Detroit Lions, the Cowboys need to take advantage of a struggling Vikings team that is still shuffling quarterbacks.

After facing several explosive offenses in the last couple of weeks, the Cowboys’ secondary will face a team who has several quarterbacks on their roster but not one definitive starting quarterback.

The Cowboys have struggled against the pass for the entire year, but have held up much better against the rush thus far. The Cowboys are ranked 17th in rushing defense this year, largely due to the stellar play of linebacker Sean Lee. While Lee may not be the fastest nor the strongest linebacker in the league, his impact this year is undeniable. The former Penn State standout is part of the upper echelon of NFL defenders. Lee is the Cowboys’ leading tackler this year, with 59 tackles on the year coming into Saturdays matchup. Lee has the ability to diagnose plays very quickly, allowing him to put himself in the correct position to get the ball carrier down as soon as possible.

Lee has a knack for being around the ball on each and every play; this is part of the reason why that he also leads the Cowboys with four interceptions on the year. With the Cowboys’ best defensive player, DeMarcus Ware, still sidelined with an injury, Lee will need to have yet another productive game. Coming into the game Sunday, the Cowboys have not allowed a hundred yard rusher on the year. Peterson has had two 100 yard games this year and has the ability at any time to go streaking down the field for a long touchdown. The proverbial unstoppable force (Peterson) meets the immovable object (Lee) Sunday, and if the Cowboys want to keep pace in the NFC East, they need Lee to continue to play at a high level.
