Cincinnati Bengals' Giovani Bernard Draws Plenty Of Similarities To Ray Rice

By Devin O'Barr

The Baltimore Ravens and Cincinnati Bengals are fierce rivals inside the AFC North, but these two NFL teams mirror one another more than you’d think.

After countless looks at Bengals’ rookie running back Giovani Bernard this season, it’s obvious that this first-year player has built his game around Ravens’ All-Pro Ray Rice. Bernard is similar to Rice in stature as both stand at exactly 5-foot-9 and a mere seven pounds separate the two running backs. On top of that, both excel in the pass game as Rice in particular has had two season in which he has had more than 700 receiving yards in one season.

In addition, neither Rice nor Bernard were selected in the first round of the NFL Draft as both were taken with in the second round instead.

Bernard showed a national audience on Thursday night just how explosive he really is, but Rice has the ability to turn on the jets as well. Many are selling Rice short, but keep in mind that Rice still has a career average of over four yards per carry despite an abysmal start to the 2013 campaign. Thankfully, NFL fans will be able to see Rice and Bernard compete for the next few years at least.

At the end of the day; Bernard’s career is off to a hot start and optimistic Bengals fans can take one look at Rice’s career and start smiling.
