Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ DC Bill Sheridan Misses the Point While Defending Greg Schiano
There aren’t many people left who haven’t criticized Greg Schiano this year. Since day one of the 2013 season there have been rumors swirling about how the head coach is not connecting with his players because of his old school style. But talk of that nature always get drown out if the team is winning. The problem is that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers haven’t been winning. In fact, they’ve yet to win a game.
As a result of all the losing and rumors out of Bucs’ camp, many people are calling for Schiano’s job. But one guy who feels all the criticism is unwarranted, is none other than Schiano’s defensive coordinator, Bill Sheridan.
Here’s what the Bucs’ DC had to say in defense of his head coach:
“It definitely is not warranted (criticism). And it may be hard for people on the outside who don’t know Greg because some of the criticism he apparently is receiving, and I don’t follow that, it definitely isn’t warranted… I would put Greg up against anybody I’ve worked for in regards to a guy of single-mindedness and purpose toward doing the job he’s been asked to do and doing it with complete and total integrity.”
That’s all fine and dandy, but of all the things I’ve heard about Schiano this season, I don’t recall anybody calling his work ethic into question. I’m sure he wants to get out of this slump more than anybody, but that’s not the point. The point is that the Bucs haven’t won a game in 2013. If you look up and down the roster and see all the talent that resides in Tampa, there’s absolutely no excuse for this team to not have a win on the board. I don’t think the Bucs are a playoff team, but they’re certainly a heck of a lot better than 0-7.
I’m sure Greg Schiano is a hard working son of a gun. But if he’s not connecting with the players and he’s not winning football games, he’s got to go. I don’t care what anybody says, if he continues to lose games and can’t get this team off the schneid, he’ll be gone before the season comes to an end.
