What Do Philadelphia Eagles Need To Do To Get Back In Contention?
The Philadelphia Eagles sit at 3-5 and are remarkably only a game out in the NFC East, or more aptly named “NFC Least”. In all honesty, this is fool’s gold. Even in the small chance that the Eagles do make the playoff’s, they have absolutely no chance against some of the NFC’s elite teams who are loaded on both sides of the ball.
The real question is, what do the Eagles need to do to get back to being a true contender in the NFC?
It starts at quarterback. The Eagles need to find one — preferably one that fits Chip Kelly’s system. If Kelly is going to implement this offense, he needs to go full tilt. That means bringing in an athletic quarterback that can run. His read-option package right now is useless with guys like Matt Barkley and Nick Foles running it. I’m not sure why it is even in the offensive playbook with those guys at the helm, but that’s a question for another day.
The defense also has to be a point of emphasis. They desperately need a guy to rush the passer running the 3-4. A threat off the edge. Trent Cole is in decline, Brandon Graham is more of a 4-3 player and while Connor Barwin is solid, he is a complimentary player. Getting an impact player both in the front seven and one in the secondary would go a long way in getting this defense back where it needs to be.
Give Billy Davis props though; despite less than ideal talent, he has had this unit playing at a high level the past few weeks.
Philly fans all miss the glory days where the Eagles were reeling off NFC crown after NFC crown. I am sure the organization craves to get back to those times too. It starts through the draft. The Eagles need that franchise guy first to build talent on defense. This isn’t a one year process. This will take a while. If they get it right, this team could go on to do special things in the future with Kelly at the helm.
