It is rare to talk about a place kicker as being a possible difference maker in a NFL game heading into the contest. However, veteran Adam Vinatieri has been huge for the Indianapolis Colts this season. If the Houston Texans’ defense decides to step up Sunday night, look for Vinatieri to be a factor in the outcome of the contest.
Not only has the future Hall of Famer been outstanding on the gridiron after converting his last 11 field goal attempts, but he also has been a great presence off the field in the locker room. It is important for a playoff contender to have that voice of a guy who has been to the top of the mountain and seen it all.
“His performance and consistency are as critical to our success as anyone’s on this team,” Ryan Grigson said, according to Colts.com “He is one of our leaders and is playing like we expect him to and I know he expects himself to.
“The unique thing about Adam is the bigger the game, the better he gets. I found that out first- hand when I watched him drill the huge upset game-winner in the Super Bowl when I was with the Rams (Super Bowl XXXVI). That’s the difference between good and great in this league, especially for kickers.”
The Texans have surrendered 27.7 points per game this season, which ranks sixth in the league. Meanwhile, the Colts have scored 26.7 points per contest.
There is a good chance Indianapolis’ offense will not be stopped by Houston’s defense. With that being said, division rivalry games can always take an interesting turn. If so, Vinatierie’s leg will play a big role in the Colts securing a win.
