Richie Incognito Should Be Seen as the Racist Adolescent He Really Is
Sunday night, it was announced that the Miami Dolphins had suspended Richie Incognito indefinitely from the team for conduct detrimental to the team. What conduct, you ask?
Fellow lineman and second year player Jonathan Martin had been receiving a little bit of hazing sent his way from Incognito over a period of time — so much so that he left the team last week. The only problem here is that this “hazing” I’m speaking of wasn’t exactly just that.
They were racist acts against a fellow teammate.
Sources have told ESPN that Incognito had been leaving voicemails and sending texts to Martin for a while now, and that these included several profane messages with both racial and homosexual allusions throughout. The Dolphins have some tape of these messages and have also released a transcript of one of them, reading as follows:
“Hey, wassup, you half n—– piece of s—. I saw you on Twitter, you been training 10 weeks. [I want to] s— in your f—ing mouth. [I'm going to] slap your f—ing mouth. [I'm going to] slap your real mother across the face [laughter]. F— you, you’re still a rookie. I’ll kill you.”
Again, the Dolphins have a copy of these tapes and so does the NFL. Sources, again telling ESPN, have said that these types of terms and messages were given to Martin over time and not just on one occasion.
First let me say that Miami has done the right thing suspending Incognito. But, this type of behavior is unacceptable — period. Not only should he never get a chance to play for Miami again, but there should be absolutely no team in the entire league to want this guy on their roster.
What Incognito said and did was not just “taking hazing too far,” as some have suggested. His behavior was not “just what professional athletes do,” or “just what guys do,” by any means. Those that are not sensitive to what has happened here are completely lost and missing the point.
The point is, Incognito is a childish, immature, brainless and incompetent racist.
He’s a racist.
He should be seen and treated as such — end of story. The league needs to send a strong message here, not allowing Incognito a foot back in the door to play at this level once again. No second chances — absolutely none. No more paychecks — termination of contract and bonuses.
Incognito should be banned from the game of football. End of story.
