San Francisco 49ers vs Carolina Panthers Preview

NFC

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

The San Francisco 49ers will have their hands full, as they return to Candlestick Park after their bye week to face the Carolina Panthers. These teams are near mirror images of one another; both teams have young, mobile quarterbacks with strong arms, top-notch running games, and more than stout defenses. These teams should have the same approach in the game, by running the football, playing defense, and having the quarterbacks make throws when necessary.

The biggest story leading into this game is the play, or limited play, of Pro Bowl linebacker Aldon Smith, and how he will play. It has been reported that Smith will only be playing as a situational pass rusher; more than likely, this coaching decision is due to Smith conditioning, or lack there of. He spent five to six weeks away from the game, so he will have to play his way into game shape.

Panthers quarterback Cam Newton and quarterback Colin Kaepernick were a part of the same draft, but have had two different career paths. Newton started immediately for his team, while Kaepernick was a backup who got his starting spot because starter Alex Smith got injured with a concussion.

For the most part, these two young quarterbacks are game managers, and this game will come down to who is the better game manager. The defenses will do their jobs and the running backs will set the tempo of this game. Fans should not expect a high-scoring game, but a low scoring game with the defenses being the stars.
