Tavon Austin’s Week 10 Breakout Performance for St. Louis Rams Just a Fluke
Everyone is freaking out over Tavon Austin’s big game in the St. Louis Rams’ 38-8 win over the Indianapolis Colts, but this hype is extremely premature. Sure, Austin’s 309 all-purpose yards are incredible and show his explosiveness, but he and this team are so inconsistent that it would be foolish to expect him to have any game that’s better than above average for the rest of the season.
Austin had 138 receiving yards in this game with two touchdowns, but he only had two catches on three targets. So this is just like any other NFL receiver having one good game and then disappearing again afterward. Remember when Eddie Royal was going to be a top-five receiver this year after he scored five touchdowns on nine catches in the Weeks 1 and 2? Yeah, me neither because he’s done nothing since then.
Folks, Austin’s kick return ability is great and he showcased it against the shell-shocked Colts, but to think he’ll break 100 receiving yards again this year is absurd. He’d never had more than 47 in a single game before Week 10 and it took him six catches to do that in Week 2.
Rams fans should be excited they have a guy who can return kicks well and provide a big play on offense every now and then, but to think Austin is going to become a big-time NFL receiver anytime soon is ridiculous. For starters, he’s to get a viable quarterback throwing him the ball because Kellen Clemens ain’t cuttin’ it and Sam Bradford isn’t the man for the long-term job, despite what Jeff Fisher and everyone else in the Rams organization says.
Enjoy Austin’s “breakout performance” and the win, Rams fans, but don’t get used to it.
