The San Francisco 49ers had to know that they had their work cut out for them in week 10 of the NFL season when they were to go up against a hot Carolina Panthers team. As the Niners have had most of their success this season running the ball, the Panthers had one of the league’s best run defenses and the potential to cause San Francisco some problems.

Problems were certainly what the 49ers were up against as they Panthers were able to grind out a 10-9 victory over San Fran. The Panthers run defense was decent, but they still allowed Frank Gore to have a decent game on the ground, rushing for 82 yards on 16 carries on the afternoon. However, it was quarterback Colin Kaepernick that failed to deliver.

Kaepernick dropped back to throw 28 times in this game and did very little with them. He was sacked six times in the game and completed only 11 of his 22 passing attempts for just 91 yards. With the chance to run a last-minute winning drive, Kaepernick also threw the game-sealing interception on a rather poor throw. His lack of production through the air would have been easier to stomach had he been using his legs effectively, but the QB rushed for just 16 yards on four carries against Carolina.

Kaepernick had a ton of hype coming into this season after his success when he took over the starting job in San Francisco last season and led the team to the Super Bowl. However, he’s not been able to replicate the mojo he had last season this year. Obviously he’s still the guy in San Fran, but if they want to make another run to the big game, Kaepernick is going to need to rise to the occasion a little more often than he has so far.
