Tennessee Titans: Despite Injuries, Jake Locker Made Progress Toward Future Contract
The Tennessee Titans’ 2013 season started off to be incredibly promising. In fact, it was one of the best stories early on in the season; the Titans’ success that is. Behind the play of third year quarterback Jake Locker, the Titans went 3-0 in their first three games and looked like they had the defense and rushing attack to compete in the AFC.
In late September, Locker was hurt and it looked bad. Having only missed three games, though, he returned to the Titans and gave his team some hope yet again. But, his play wasn’t quite the same as it was early on in the year. After returning from injury, Locker tossed four interceptions in three games — the only picks he’d thrown all year.
Sunday, in a loss to the previously winless Jacksonville Jaguars, Locker suffered what was believed to be a Lisfranc injury in his foot and is all but out for the season. The team was said to be “99 percent sure” Locker was out for the year. At this point, the Titans’ playoff hopes are essentially done with as well as Locker’s season.
In an important season for Locker, he will now face an all-important final season in his four year contract in 2014. In his first two seasons with the Titans, many were unsure whether or not he’d be the guy for the future. But, the growth and development he showed this season should be enough to continue to have faith in him going forward.
Of course, it will all depend on how he plays next season. But, if he can recover completely and return to form, there’s no reason to believe Locker won’t continue to improve. His mobility took on a new level of excitement this year as he helped the Titans’ rushing attack in a big way, especially when Chris Johnson was having a tough time getting it going on the ground.
Locker’s efficiency early on is something to be excited for in 2014 if you’re a Tennessee fan, but for the rest of 2013, the Titans will have to continue on without him. Hopefully, in 2014, Locker can come back better than ever and continue his bid for another contract in Tennessee.
