The Cleveland Browns wasn’t the only team that left their fans with a bad aftertaste, as the Cincinnati Bengals demolished any chances for the Dawgs to be tied for first place in the AFC North with a convincing 40-21 score. Instead, it was the Atlanta Falcons who left their fans absolutely disgusted after dropping their fourth game in a row to the lowly Tampa Bay Buccaneers with the shocking score of 41-28.
Watching the game was not only disheartening; the way the Falcons performed against a team they beat just a few weeks ago was downright pathetic. Imagine Frodo never achieving his mission in destroying the ring, thus allowing Middle Earth to be taken over by darkness. Imagine if Harry Potter never defeated Lord Voldemort. Imagine if Mel Brooks never went psycho, oh wait, he was already crazy … but you get my point. We all know the Falcons’ season has been over, but for them to perform like that against one of the worst teams in the NFL is unacceptable.
Injuries has taken its toll on the Dirty Birds this year, but that does not excuse the Falcons getting outperformed in the basics of football such as tackling, blocking and making good decisions with the ball. Matt Ryan, who has been one of the better quarterbacks in the league, looked more like Matt Schaub this past Sunday, as he threw another pick-six.
While Ryan was struggling with his back pedaling after snapping the ball, Buccaneers’ quarterback Mike Glennon made a fool out of Ryan, as he completed 20-23 passes for 231 yards, two touchdowns, zero interceptions and more importantly, led his team to a victory over the underachieving Falcons.
If the offense wasn’t bad enough, the Dirty Birds defense made sure that their performance was just as bad, if not worse. Vincent Jackson’s big day wasn’t that big of a surprise, as the veteran receiver hauled in 10 passes for 165 yards and one touchdown.
Even though Jackson had a big day on the outside, it was the Buccaneers running back that stole the headlines. Bobby Rainey made it rain against the Falcons, as he rushed for 163 yards on 30 carries and scorched them with two touchdowns. The Falcons wished that they had the option of calling “Broken Arrow”, but the only help the Falcons received was their cool Gatorade drinks on the sideline.
As the Falcons are quickly dropping from one of the best to one of the worst with a 2-8 record, they can only pray for better days where they lose with some dignity. So far, the Falcons latest loss may have crushed their confidence completely, as the Falcons cheerleaders look more in synch with their dance moves than the players do on the field.
Overall, the Falcons performance was disgusting and one of the ugliest games played yet. To lose is one thing, but to lose the way the Falcons have been losing is just depressing and very frustrating.
