If anyone was brave enough to turn on their television set and watch the Atlanta Falcons game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers they would understand that not only have the players somewhat quit on themselves, but they are playing with zero confidence and it is showing big time.
Against the Buccaneers, the secondary seemed either scared to challenge top receiver in Vincent Jackson in hopes of preventing a big play or they were second guessing themselves whether they can defend at all. Even offensively, Roddy White, who has some of the best hands in the league, seemed to be rattled a little bit when he dropped an easy pass to convert on a third-and-two.
With Matt Ryan had yet another multi-pick game that included another pick-six for one of the better quarterbacks in the league. He seems tentative and stiff in throwing the ball as if he is unsure what to do with the football in his hands.
The Falcons are out reasons and excuses in trying to make sense of a rapid turnaround from 13-3 to 2-8 in just less than a year. But if Sunday’s game showed anything about the Falcons they seem to have lost both their swagger and confidence all at once. Tight end Tony Gonzalez told ESPN:
“The only thing you can do is go out there and work to get out of it. It’s confidence right now. It’s not about talent. It’s not about anything else except confidence; knowing that we can go out there and get the job done. If you don’t have confidence, then things are going to be bad for you. And that’s with anything you do in life.”
At the moment, the Falcons’ latest decline with four straight losses including a blowout against a team that just recently won their first game of the year may have sucked the confidence out of these Falcons for good.
With the team currently paralyzed from being shocked with their performance, the Falcons still have six games remaining on their schedule. No matter what, win or lose, the Falcons will need to start playing with some much-needed confidence.
Even if the Falcons lose every single game to end their woeful season they will have the choice in how they will finish their season. Just like Gonzalez said, without confidence, it doesn’t matter what you do because it will be pointless in the end.
Unfortunately for the Falcons, more than half of them have lost confidence with themselves and in their teammates, which will continue their awful season and quickly become unbearable.
