The Philadelphia Eagles took advantage of the Dallas Cowboys being on a bye and moved into first place of the NFC East. Now the tide has turned — the Eagles are on a bye, and the Cowboys are now in a must-win situation. Cowboys Nation should rest easy because Miles Austin‘s return guarantees that Dallas will take over first place again after this Sunday’s victory over division rival and one of the hottest teams in the league right now, the New York Giants.
Austin has missed the last three games in which Dallas went 1-2, but he also had two games prior where he was unable to get a catch and wasn’t targeted once by Tony Romo. Those two games occurred against the divisional rivals Eagles and Washington Redskins, although Dallas was able to win both of them. Injuries have been the biggest reason for Austin’s disappearance from the Cowboys’ stat sheet for the past five games, but his’ return this week will doom the Giants.
In clutch situations, the Cowboys have been stuck with the likes of Dwayne Harris and Cole Beasley in the spot where Austin would normally be. Harris is a solid kick returner, but comes up short as a receiver. Although I see a bit of Wes Welker in Beasley, he isn’t near the level yet where he can be counted on in these situations.
Austin’s return to said situations will allow Romo to keep the offense on the field longer and keep Dallas’ terrible defense off the field where they can’t screw up the game. In Week 1, Miles was Romo’s favorite target against the Giants. Although that may not be the case this Sunday, Austin will do enough to help the Cowboys reclaim the lead in the NFC East.
