Carolina Panthers’ Offensive Line A Potential Weakness

Robert Mayer-USA TODAY Sports

The Carolina Panthers have done well during these last couple games and have become a threat in the NFC. Today’s game might have found a weakness in this hot team.

The Panthers’ offensive line has shown a potential weakness in the win against the Miami Dolphins, the inability to hold the rush and committing penalties. This could be a problem down the stretch if the line cannot keep Cam Newton protected, especially if Newton uses his feet to move the ball down the field. The Panthers have to do a better job at protecting enough for either the run game getting to the open field, or Newton enough time to get a pass off. However, the Panthers’ offensive line cannot resort to holding the player to help that case. Perhaps playing better off the snap and when they can create holes, the running backs for Carolina are solid in either using their speed to break away or use their power to break the tackles of either the linebackers or secondary.

The problem that I have identified should be an easy fix for a hot team to solve. With the Panthers in the thick of the playoff race, they would be smart to solve it before the postseason if they would like any legitimate chance to make a run. It is great to see the Panthers on this hot streak, but once they can figure out how to open up holes for the running backs and to protect Newton so that he can beat the teams through the air and on the ground, I have no doubt that the Panthers will be a great team come January.
