Kansas City Chiefs’ Defense Looking Shaky Late, Suffering from Injuries
As the Kansas City Chiefs went into their high-profile matchup with the Denver Broncos in week 11, they boasted one of the best defenses in the NFL. It was expected that Peyton Manning and the Broncos would put that Chiefs defense to the test and that’s exactly the way things played out in that big matchup.
The Chiefs surrendered 427 yards of total offense to Denver in the game, 323 coming through the air and 104 coming on the ground, as Kansas City suffered their first loss of the season by a score of 27-17.
As the Chiefs head into their rematch with the Broncos in week 13, though, they now have two losses and their defense has looked much shakier as of late. Kansas City fell to the San Diego Chargers this past Sunday as they allowed 41 points, 491 yards of total offense and weren’t able to force a single turnover.
The Chiefs defense hasn’t been solid against the run over the past two weeks and has been even worse against the pass. Against Manning and the Broncos and one thing, but getting lit up by the Chargers is another matter entirely. This defense is reeling and may be in the process of getting exposed. Against the Broncos this coming Sunday, it could get even worse.
In their loss to San Diego, two of their most talented defensive players in Justin Houston and Tamba Hali both suffered injuries. Houston will be out for the next couple of weeks with a dislocated elbow and Hali’s status is uncertain for this week with an ankle injury, though it was announced that it is not a high-ankle sprain.
Without two of their biggest threats in their front seven against the Broncos, the Chiefs could certainly be in for another paltry showing. This team has looked like a serious contender for much of the season, but that’s in serious jeopardy given their recent play. Perhaps they are being exposed, or perhaps they’ve been pressing and cracking under pressure. Whatever the case is, though, Kansas City needs to redeem themselves if they want to continue to be taken seriously.
