New York Jets’ Playoff Chances Are Likely Over
So much for win one, lose one. The New York Jets managed to get on their first losing streak of the season with a second straight pathetic offensive performance on the road, losing 19-3 to the Baltimore Ravens. Geno Smith continued his slump, completing just 9/22 passes for 127 yards and 2 interceptions. The offensive line was terrible in pass protection for the second straight week, the receivers had several drops and the Jets failed to establish the strong run game they needed.
This loss drops the Jets to 5-6, severely damaging their playoff chances. The Tennessee Titans, Pittsburgh Steelers and Ravens all hold tiebreakers over the Jets, who still have two games to play against the 5-6 Miami Dolphins as well. The Jets are most likely going to need to win out to make the playoffs, which is rather unlikely given both their schedule and their incredibly ineffective offense.
The Jets still have to travel to face the Carolina Panthers, which is a near guarantee to be a loss. The Dolphins will be desperate for wins in those two meetings, and the Cleveland Browns and Oakland Raiders will both challenge the Jets as well. There doesn’t appear to be any likely scenario in which the Jets can rally and go a win streak, and it appears they will be left on the outside looking in.
There are going to be some serious internal discussions about what these poor performances mean for the futures of Rex Ryan and Geno Smith. The Jets have to be questioning whether or not Smith is really their quarterback of the future, as his play has been horrendous for a month straight now. As for Ryan, he will need several wins to get a contract extension, and the Jets have to wonder if he is the right man to lead this team forward.
Optimistic Jet fans (if there is such a thing) will claim that their is still hope, as the Jets have four games against AFC Wild Card contenders remaining. However, they could not afford this loss to Ravens, and their disastrous offense has shown no signs of improvement. The Jets blew a huge opportunity on Sunday, and it will cost them their chance at the playoffs.
