Philadelphia Eagles: Sunday’s Outcome Depends on Blitz

Howard Smith-USA TODAY Sports

The Philadelphia Eagles face a series of challenging games made even more important with the Dallas Cowboys getting a win yesterday. The race for the division could very well be week to week and the Eagles and Nick Foles will need to make it count. This week they face one of the best receivers in the game in Larry Fitzgerald. His partner, Michael Floyd, is having a solid year and both have benefited from the play of Carson Palmer. So the question remains, how do you beat the Arizona Cardinals? The blitz.

Palmer, like Foles, will not win many races in this league. This is the game for Billy Davis to start dialing up the pressure packages. He should have Bradley Fletcher back on the outside and we will see if he has enough faith to leave Fletcher and Cary Williams manned up. If he does, look for pressure from Brandon Boykin, Nate Allen and other members of the secondary.

Of course, if the front guys do their job, Davis may be able to leave more in coverage. Trent Cole needs to build on the last game and keep getting sacks. I’d have Vinny Curry out there more than he’s been all season. The Cardinals do not have a dangerous run game so this is the time to line up and tee off against the offense. The defense line, anchored by Fletcher Cox, must maintain their surge of improved play in recent weeks.

The Eagles can win this game if they get to Palmer. Limit his time and you will take away the receiving threats on the outside. Do this and Chip Kelly‘s offense should be enough to score points and leave Lincoln Financial Field with another important victory.
