New England Patriots Cannot Afford Another Injury To A Wide Receiver
Yet another wide receiver was injured for the New England Patriots in the win against the Houston Texans. This time, it was Kenbrell Thompkins, whose injury is making the wide receiver position really thin in New England.
Thompkins suffered a hip injury after landing on his side awkwardly while making a reception. He tried to play after that, but was eventually sat down for the remainder of the game. This injury became even more significant because Aaron Dobson had missed the game with a foot injury.
So now the Patriots could be down to just three healthy wide receivers. That would be Julian Edelman, Danny Amendola and Josh Boyce. This is not good considering that Amendola is injury-prone and that Boyce has only caught two passes all season. As of this moment, Edelman is the only reliable wide receiver in this group.
Dobson and Thompkins are the no. 2 and no. 3 wide receivers respectively. Although both rookies have rotated, they could be used at the same time. In a three-receiver package, the best look that Josh McDaniels could give would be Edelman, Dobson and Thompkins. Even though that is not how McDaniels does it, that is the best trio in the group right now.
So the impact will be felt on Tom Brady should Dobson and Thompkins miss extended time. He was able to get away with throwing to Edelman and Rob Gronkowski most of the time, but that will not work against some of the tougher defenses in the NFL. Brady will need his rookie wide receivers should he be able to sustain another deep playoff run.
