2014 NFL Draft: Chicago Bears’ Plans Change As Top QBs Start To Fall
With a 6-6 overall record the Chicago Bears are currently slotted for the 14th overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. While first-year head coach Marc Trestman would like for his team to make the postseason, a playoff berth for Chicago doesn’t look very likely heading into Week 14. With that being said, the offseason is nearing which means Bears general manager Phil Emery has a ton of decisions to make.
In particular, Chicago has three options when it comes to starting quarterback Jay Cutler. The soon-to-be free agent can either be given the franchise tag for one year, signed to a long-term contract or the Bears can tell Cutler to get lost. Even still, no matter what decision Emery makes when it comes to Cutler the Bears will still draft a quarterback this May.
Names like Zach Mettenberger, Aaron Murray and Marcus Mariota have all circulated in the Windy City over the past few months, but neither of those three will be a first-round pick as the first two have suffered torn ACLs while Mariota has decided to return to the Oregon Ducks. Therefore, Emery is going to have to get creative with replacing Cutler via the draft.
With such uncertainty at the quarterback position, I wouldn’t be surprised in the least if Chicago decides to package up a few picks to move up in the draft to select a difference-maker like Derek Carr.
