New Orleans Saints’ Week 13 Loss Was Disappointing, Semi-Worrisome
Let’s start with the obvious.
Quite simply, the Saints were outplayed. Their top five defense which had been improving against the run did manage to hold Seattle running back Marshawn Lynch to just 45 yards rushing, but it failed to account for others like Robert Turbin and the young, athletic quarterback Russell Wilson. Turbin and Wilson rushed for 47 and 34 yards, respectively.
Not only did New Orleans’ defense fail to account for the other Seahawks runners, but it also didn’t show Wilson the proper amount of respect and attention as a passer. Wilson went 22-for-30 passing for 310 yards and three touchdowns. About eight minutes before halftime on a third-and-three, Wilson really showed maturity and poise from within the pocket when the Saints came on an all out blitz. He calmly stood in the pocket and threw a deep ball to receiver Doug Baldwin for 52 yards.
That is pretty much how the night went for the Saints’ defense, and the offense was not any better.
Drew Brees was held to just 147 yards and went 23-for-38 passing. His consecutive streak of 200 or more passing yards stopped that evening at 43, and Brees, Jimmy Graham,Darren Sproles and the rest of the offensive unit just had no answer for Seattle’s big, strong and fast defense. Brees was sacked only once, but that one time was a strip-sack which resulted in touchdown for the Seahawks.
All in all, it was not a good night to watch New Orleans play football if you are a Who Dat fan. Their performance had to have some wondering whether or not the Saints can compete in the playoffs later down the road. If New Orleans does well the rest of the season and locks up the No. 2 seed it is likely they will have to go back to CenturyLink Field for another match up against the Seahawks.
While it would be nice for the Saints to have another opportunity to play a better game against Seattle, every New Orleans fan is worried about this scenario. I know I am.
Still, there is plenty of football left to play and only time will tell.
