Can Nick Foles Continue His Greatness For Philadelphia Eagles?
The Philadelphia Eagles are finding a ton of unexpected success in Chip Kelly’s first season as head coach. They have won four in a row and played themselves into a tie for the NFC East lead, which looks like it may carry itself to the final game of the season. There are many aspects of the game that have developed for the Eagles over the year, including a defense that was supposed to be less than impressive.
However, the major story of the season is Nick Foles. After losing out on the starting job to Michael Vick in training camp, Foles has taken the opportunity presented to him and is running with it. His continuously consistent play at the quarterback position has kept the Eagles in contention for a playoff run. He has opened eyes around the league with his accuracy and decision making, and it is his play that has really had a large effect on the offense catching its stride. He has a current run of 19 touchdowns without an interception that is just one off the NFL record, held by Peyton Manning. In addition, Foles has built a quarterback rating that is the highest in the league over the course of the season, as well as in history, with just four games remaining.
The only real problem lies in the fact that now, everyone knows about him. Foles had one hiccup earlier in the season against the Dallas Cowboys, in what could have been slated as Philadelphia’s biggest game. Since that point, he’s been nearly flawless. As the schedule gets more difficult and better teams attempt to find new ways to put pressure on him, it’s Foles’ reaction that will have everyone’s focus.
Can he be the franchise quarterback the Eagles have been searching for?
Only time will tell.
He has demonstrated that he can be great, but replicating those successes during the pressure times of a playoff run is yet to be seen. If he can pull that off, not only will Foles set the Eagles up to become division champions, but he’ll solidify his place behind center for the future in Philadelphia, as well as in history.
