Adrian Peterson Injured: Minnesota Vikings Should Shut Down the Reigning MVP

Mitch Stringer-USA TODAY Sports

Aside from the pandemonium that was the last two minutes of the Minnesota Vikings’ game against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, there was a tough loss suffered by the purple and gold. Early in the second quarter, the reigning MVP Adrian Peterson injured his ankle after catching a third down pass from Matt Cassel. Peterson stretched out to try and make the first down, but immediately rolled over in pain after hitting the ground.

The running back had to be helped off the field, and, after having his ankle examined on the sidelines Peterson was taken back to the locker room on a cart.

The good news is that Peterson walked on his own power later when going between the locker room and x-ray room. Head coach Leslie Frazier also said that as of right now, his diagnosis is a sprained ankle. Peterson will get an MRI on Monday where they will then find out more about the extent of the sprain.

With just three games remaining in the season, the Vikings have nothing but pride left to play for. The playoffs are out of the question and, at this point, Minnesota would be better off shutting down Peterson for the year. The 7-year veteran should make his health the only concern at this point, especially because his window of performing at such a high level will be closed within the next couple seasons.

For Peterson hurt, expect Toby Gerhart to get the bulk of the carries if he is sidelined for an extended period of time. If they choose to bring Peterson back, his carries will likely be lessened a bit in order to keep him healthy. Gerhart’s performance Sunday against the Ravens should be enough to warrant some faith in him for the rest of the year.

Russell Wilson Is A Freaking Magician

There aren't too many quarterbacks who could make this play. Russell Wilson had to run 10-15 yards to recover the ball, then escape pressure and find a wide-open Tyler Lockett for the biggest play of the game. If the Seahawks win, this will be the turning point.
