Stout Defense Sees The San Francisco 49ers Win In Week 14
Despite what the final score line ended up saying after the San Francisco 49ers lost to the Seattle Seahawks back in Week 2, the 49ers’ defense had a good game in what was a losing effort. In order to achieve victory over the Seahawks on Sunday afternoon, the 49ers were going to have to have another stout defensive effort in order to come out with a win. That is exactly what happened, as the defense shined and came through in a big way as the 49ers defeated the Seahawks 19-17 in a great NFC West battle.
The two most important individuals that an opposition defense must key on and contain in order to give itself a chance of defeating the Seahawks are Russell Wilson and Marshawn Lynch. While Lynch had a good first half and scored an 11 yard rushing touchdown, the 49ers’ defense did a good job ensuring that Lynch did not break a big one on them, as he was only able to rush for 72 yards on 20 carries. In the second half, Lynch found running the football much, much harder, as the vast majority of his runs were only for two or three yards.
As far as containing Wilson, the 49ers’ defense, from the very first drive of the game, did a good job of containing him and not letting him beat them with his legs, as NaVorro Bowman on a crucial third down, play sacked and forced the ball to pop loose. This set the tempo for the 49ers’ defense, as they showed on a regular basis that they could pressure Wilson and make throwing the football a challenge. Wilson’s final stat line was a pedestrian 15-of-25 for 199 yards with one touchdown and an interception.
As always, sometimes it is one play or drive that defines how well you play, and the 49ers’ defense came through when needed the most, as in the fourth quarter with the 49ers up 16-14, the Seahawks began a drive deep in the 49ers half of the field. All the 49ers’ defense did was hold the Seahawks to a field goal, and as a result, this allowed the 49ers to, on the next drive, put together a game-winning drive for the winning score. This cemented what was a banner day for the 49ers’ defense and a number of individuals in a crucial win.
