The buzz around Charm City is all about the return of Dennis Pitta and how he can help the Baltimore Ravens push for the playoffs. There is another tight end in Baltimore who is putting work in as well, although it may not be through the air. Ed Dickson is a grinder that deserves to be recognized for his work lately.
Sure, people have criticized the former Oregon Duck for not having hands earlier in the season. Critics were upset because he couldn’t produce like Pitta. Not many tight ends in the entire league will produce like Pitta, however, and Dickson has come through in other ways for the Ravens.
In the last three games, his blocking ability has been key. Dickson has obviously been doing something right because John Harbaugh has kept him active and not brought back Billy Bajema. Dickson was also kept active with the return of Pitta while Dallas Clark was a healthy scratch — that speaks volumes to what the organization thinks of him.
Harbaugh has to be patting himself on the back for the move as Dickson had a two-yard touchdown in the first quarter. Dickson may have been rusty as the season began and received some public criticism earlier in the year from Harbaugh, but the message is clear that Dickson is a worker. He may not have the chemistry with Flacco that Pitta had, but he is working to make the most of the opportunities when on the field.
Teams are going to be game-planning Pitta, but have no clue there is another TE ready to bust them for big gains as Dickson has shown this season on a 43-yard snag against the Miami Dolphins, as well as a 27-yard catch against the New York Jets. Joe Flacco may have his security blanket back, but he’ll be looking to find Dickson more as he begins to trust him. Keep an eye on this grinder as he slowly proves his worth on the active roster.
