Denver Broncos: Wes Welker Injury Should Benefit the Other Wide Receivers

Look out Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker. There is a good chance you will have a field day.

The Denver Broncos announced that slot wide out Wes Welker will be missing Thursday Night’s game against the San Diego Chargers with the concussion he suffered against the Tennessee Titans in the second quarter. This gives the other two wide outs a great chance to make their mark in this game. Thomas and Decker, and even Julius Thomas, should get plenty of opportunities to increase their stats against a questionable Chargers defense. Decker is looking to become the fifth player on the Broncos offense to have at least 10 touchdowns in a single season, which would increase the record the Broncos have set earlier in the season.

Let us not forget that Jacob Tamme and Andre Caldwell could also benefit from Welker’s injury. Two players that do not get a whole lot of time to play should benefit because the opposing defenses will not be prepared for them. This can be beneficial for both Caldwell and Tamme. While Welker’s injury is definitely a loss for the Broncos offense, Peyton Manning always seems to find a way to rebound from it.

Having an option taken away means that Thomas and Decker basically just really have to split the targets between themselves and Julius Thomas. With Demaryius Thomas’ size and ability to make plays over the defender and Decker’s speed and great ability to make a move and break into the open field, there will be no denying that Manning losing Welker will not be such a bad thing, especially if there are still a lot of weapons that he can still throw to.
