Robert Quinn, St. Louis Rams Defense Make Serious Statement vs. New Orleans Saints
It’s hard to call what the St. Louis Rams did against the New Orleans Saints a true “statement” as the headline implies, but it’s just as difficult to say the Rams didn’t open some eyes around the league with the potential they showed on Sunday.
Although the final quarter was difficult to watch in general, the defense as a whole really showed some serious signs of progress on Sunday. Any time the great Drew Brees throws more interceptions than touchdowns you know the opposing defense had a pretty solid outing. And of course the main power behind that defensive effort for St. Louis was none other than defensive end Robert Quinn who continues to have an absolutely epic season rushing the passer.
Quinn’s numbers had slacked off a bit over the past two weeks, but he was certainly on his game this weekend. Two more sacks and yet another forced fumble raised the pass rusher’s already ridiculous season totals to 15 and seven respectively. His15 sacks rank him second in the NFL behind only Robert Mathis of the Indianapolis Colts and his seven forced fumbles pace the league. The art of the sack/fumble appears to have been mastered by Quinn in his third year in the league, and that can only mean big things moving forward for the still just 23-year-old.
Though the defense did surrender plenty of yards (432) and first downs (30), the bend but don’t break philosophy worked like a charm and critical turnovers really swung the game in favor of the Rams. Depending on turnovers every week is a recipe to being mediocre, but the Rams have shown the potential to create big momentum-changing plays on a regular basis. Having that in their repertoire as a defense can really bode well for the team moving into 2014.
It’s hard to be terribly excited with a win given that all playoff hopes are gone and each victory only hurts the team’s selection in the upcoming NFL Draft, but at least the Washington Redskins lost yet again, right?
