This game Sunday between the Indianapolis Colts (9-5) and Kansas City Chiefs (11-3) has enormous playoff implications written all over it. Entering the game in Arrowhead Stadium, the two teams would square off in the WildCard Round of the playoffs just two weeks later.
That’s one big reason why this game means a lot to both teams. They don’t want to show everything they have as they may have a more meaningful matchup in two weeks. This time, though, the game would be in Lucas Oil Stadium.
Another reason why this game has huge playoff implications is they may not be playing each other depending on the outcome of this game and others around the league.
Entering the game, Kansas City is tied with the Denver Broncos for the AFC West lead. Denver holds the tiebreaker due to sweeping Kansas City this year, but if Kansas City wins out and Denver loses on of the remaining two games, then the Chiefs win the division and could possibly get home-field advantage.
That gives Kansas City a ton to play for as they could either play on the road for the duration of the playoffs or get home-field advantage. That could be the difference of making the Super Bowl or not.
For Indianapolis, the Colts are currently the four seed, but the three teams they’re chasing for playoff seeding all lost last Sunday. That means the Colts are tied with the Cincinnati Bengals for the three seed, one game out of the New England Patriots for the two seed and two games out of the Broncos for the top seed.
It’s looking bleak like they can catch Denver, but getting the two seed and a first round bye could be crucial. If Indianapolis wins Sunday and again next week against the Jacksonville Jaguars, while the Bengals and Patriots lose one of their last two games, then Indianapolis gets a first round bye.
It’s a very good possibility that the duo can lose at least once as both have to play the surging Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens have a lot on the table as far as playoff hopes, so they will give both their best shot.
That’s why this game on Sunday is so crucial for both teams’ playoff hopes.
