I have written several articles this 2013 NFL season praising and extolling the virtues of the play by the San Francisco 49ers special teams. In particular I highlighted how they played an integral role in the 49ers Week 7 win over the Tennessee Titans and how well they played last weekend as the 49ers pulled off a 19-17 win over NFC West division rival the Seattle Seahawks. Well this past Sunday in the 49ers 33-14 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the 49ers special teams once again played an integral part in another 49ers win.
Once again, Phil Dawson has proven to be the steady and reliable kicker that the 49ers did not have during the 2012 season which saw the team have to deal with a very unreliable David Akers. On Sunday, Dawson made all four of his field goal attempts which were from 47, 43, 21, and 35 yards. Dawson has made his last 22 field goal attempts with his last miss coming back during the 49ers’ opener against the Green Bay Packers.
With the 49ers having just gone on a long scoring drive which swung the momentum back in their favor to go up 23-14, all the 49ers special teams had to do was make sure that the Buccaneers did not break off a big return which would allow them to halt the momentum they had snatched away. The kickoff return by Eric Page resulted in muff, and being alert to the situation, Kendall Hunter pounced on the loose ball to score a special teams touchdown that sealed a 49ers win in Week 15.
