Bears vs. Eagles: Philadelphia Must Contain Monstrous Chicago Receiving Duo

Brace Hemmelgarn-USA TODAY Sports

The Philadelphia Eagles‘ secondary faces by far its biggest test of the season on Sunday night. They have the misfortune of trying to defend the dynamic receiving duo of Alshon Jeffery and Brandon Marshall.

Good luck with all of that. These two are beasts. Both are physical specimens who present a size and speed mismatch on the outside that is simply unfair to opposing corners. The Eagles’ struggles in the back end are well documented. They got torched by backup quarterback Matt Cassel of all people and let an aging Greg Jennings run wild all over them.

To their credit, aside from last Sunday’s disaster the Eagles’ back end has for the most part gotten the job done. In the end, though, their true colors will show. We are getting towards playoff football where the teams are all top notch, and any weakness a team has will be exploited.

The quarterbacks and receivers are simply too good in today’s NFL. We all know about Marshall as a proven commodity at receiver in this league, but the real gem has been Jeffery. He has broken out as a superstar at wide receiver. He makes circus catches that defy gravity seemingly every week. He certainly bailed out Jay Cutler and the Chicago Bears last week with a spectacular, acrobatic grab over three defenders. Cary Williams and Bradley Fletcher may be in for a long day Sunday.

Eagles defensive coordinator Billy Davis is going to put them out on an island against these two, and both will have to be at the very top of their games. Both Marshall and Jeffery are going to get their catches and yards, but it’s up to the two veteran corners to prevent these two from taking over the game.

They are very capable of doing so. This is the Eagles’ biggest defensive test of the season. Will they measure up to the challenge? Tune in Sunday night and find out.
