There always seems to be negatives that accompany the positives when it comes to the New England Patriots. The positive was that the Patriots destroyed the Baltimore Ravens yesterday, winning 41-7 in Baltimore. Yet the negative, a groin injury for Shane Vereen, might just be the back-breaker for this team.
Vereen came up limp when he had a Ravens defender beat on a wheel route. He immediately went to the locker room and did not return to the game. Maybe it was a precaution, but what we do know is that the injury was serious enough to keep him out for the rest of the game. The most likely scenario is that Vereen pulled his groin. If this is true, his absence could range from no time to several weeks. It depends on how harsh the groin pull was (if that is the injury).
Tom Brady cannot afford to have Vereen miss any extended action. There is still something left to play for in Week 17 as the Patriots have a shot at the no. 1 seed in the AFC. At the very worst, a Patriots win would mean a guaranteed bye week and a top-two overall seed.
Achieving this will not be easy without Vereen. He is a dynamic weapon in the passing game as he is able to consistently beat opposing linebackers and safeties in coverage. We all saw how inconsistent Brady was without Vereen and Rob Gronkowski for a stretch of games. The Patriots’ offense would probably take a similar hit if Vereen were to miss any time.
