5 Key Player Positions For A Denver Broncos Playoff Run
Football is a team sport, and teams need every position to be at their best to win a game.
The Denver Broncos have made the postseason and have won the AFC West for the third straight year. This would not have been possible for this team if they did not have every player on the roster competing at the highest level. That plus proper game planning is the difference between winning and losing games. It is safe to say that the Broncos have done all of that for the most part as their 12-3 record shows.
During this season, this Broncos team has been known more for their offense instead of the defense. The offense has turned into an elite group. Of course, when you have a future Hall of Fame quarterback in Peyton Manning it is clear to see why that would be the case. But again, football is a team sport and it takes more than Manning to win a game. He has quite a support group on offense that he can hand or throw the ball to and put the play into their hands. The defense has been a different story. The Broncos teams of the past have been known for their defensive plays. However, injuries and inconstancy have made the difference this year. But with all things that can go wrong, the defensive unit this year has still had quite a few bright spots like turnovers and pressure. Despite the hardship this year, the defense is still standing.
Here are five player positions that I believe will be key for the Broncos when January begins.
5. Running Back
The Broncos are in a good spot with this position. The running back tandem of Knowshon Moreno and Montee Ball has had its high and low points. However, as of recently this position has done well for the team. With Moreno's speed and role in the passing game as well as Ball's power running, this could be a position that can really help Manning when the weather gets colder.
4. Defensive Line/Linebackers
As I have stated before, the Broncos defense has not been what it was once known for this season, but the defensive line has been a formidable force as they are only separated from the quarterback by the offensive line. Normally they are the first ones to the quarterback, and this line is going to have to keep up the pressure if they want to help the team have a deep run this season.
Matt Prater has been quite the sensational kicker this year. He has not missed an extra point and has only missed one field goal this year. To say that Prater has been a huge part to the team's production would be a huge understatement. This trend should continue in January, especially if he is kicking in the thin air of Mile High.
2. Wide Receiver
The Broncos have been fortunate to have such a great group of wideouts this season. With the signing of Wes Welker in the offseason and adding on Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker from last season gives this offense a lot of weapons to work with. All three wideouts have recorded double-digit touchdown catches this year. This could easily be the best receiving corps in the league.
When you have a famous quarterback like Manning on your team, there is no doubt that this position will be a key part to a run in the postseason. With a record setting season, Manning has not disappointed at all. The key is that he remains healthy as he always finds a way to keep defenses guessing.
