There is no disputing that Vernon Davis has been having a very good season so far from the tight end position with his 49 receptions for 805 yards and 12 touchdowns not telling the full story with regards to his importance to the San Francisco 49ers‘ offense and quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Yet on Monday night, Davis did not fare well as he played the worst game of the 2013 season in accordance to his talent and what he has shown so far this season.

For the game Monday night against the Atlanta Falcons, Davis had no receptions from three pass targets. While the numbers make it seem like he just wasn’t targeted at all during the game, his play on the field did not inspire confidence or feeling that Davis was on his game Monday night as he had a couple of dropped passes on those three targets. It probably didn’t help that Davis missed some time during the game for an undisclosed injury when he appeared to possibly have been poked in the eye and having blurred vision for some time as a result.

Going into the 49ers’ Week 17 game against the Arizona Cardinals, Davis will need to step up and play much better than he did on Monday night against a good Cardinals defense. In the first meeting between both teams back in Week 5, Davis had a very good game as he had eight receptions for 180 yards and two touchdowns with one of those being a 61-yard touchdown reception. Davis did a fine job in that game of beating the Cardinals off the line without getting jammed, and he did a good job of being an outlet for Kaepernick when he got out of the pocket.

Now as Davis and the 49ers take on a Cardinals defense who has gotten better since the last meeting but is also missing a key player at safety in Tyrann Mathieu, the matchup offers Davis a chance to have another big game as he can once again exploit that soft spot in the Cardinals defense. After Monday night’s performance, Davis should be primed and ready to once again play like a top end tight end.
