Can Alex Smith Lead Kansas City Chiefs To Super Bowl XLVIII?

Chiefs

It’s hard to believe that the team that was once 9-0, the Kansas City Chiefs, would be starting their playoff run as the fifth seed in the AFC and on the road against the Indianapolis Colts, but here we are. With Kansas City’s playoff run set to begin this weekend, it begs the question: can Alex Smith lead them to the Super Bowl?

Since being drafted first overall in the 2005 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers, Smith has been a part of two playoff teams but hasn’t played in a playoff game since 2011. He was the starting quarterback of the 49ers last season before going down due to injury and watched as Colin Kaepernick took his job. Now, he is the starting quarterback of the Chiefs and is poised to stake his own claim in the NFL playoffs.

All season long, Smith has been a solid quarterback for Andy Reid and the Chiefs. He’s thrown for 3,313 yards, 23 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He’s proven to be a mobile quarterback by also rushing for 431 yards and a score. On the season, he has a QBR of 49.4 and a passer rating of 89.1. His numbers aren’t terrible, but they don’t scream NFL MVP either. To put it simply, he’s been a solid game manager for the Chiefs.

That “solid game manager” moniker is what people have been calling Smith all season long. Is it wrong? Absolutely not. He calls the play in the huddle, takes the snap from the center and runs the play that is called. He doesn’t venture too far out of his comfort zone and plays within himself. It’s not a bad trait to have in a quarterback. People tend to think of that label as sort of an insult when it’s really quite the opposite.

However, it certainly isn’t going to lead a team to a Super Bowl. While Smith isn’t going to cost your team a football game, you can’t rely on him to win you one, either. It will take a total team effort to pull off a come-from-behind victory or squeak out a close win in the waning minutes. For Kansas City however, that works just fine because they’ve put together a solid team around him.

The Chiefs boast arguably the best defense in the NFL, and their offense is loaded. Jamaal Charles, Dwayne Bowe, Donnie Avery and Dexter McCluster are all major playmakers for Kansas City. As a collective unit, they are one of the best teams in the NFL and should certainly be viewed as one of the favorites in the AFC.

So, having a “game manager” like Smith as your quarterback isn’t a bad thing at all. When you put talent around that player, much like what Kansas City has been able to do, good things will come of it. If your team is well rounded and above average across the depth chart, you’ve got a good recipe for a winning football team. In Kansas City, they’ve brewed that recipe up perfectly.

However, the question was can Smith lead the Chiefs to the Super Bowl? The answer is a resounding no. He’s not going cost them a football game, but he certainly can’t be relied on to win one either. Smith does what Smith feels comfortable doing, and that will work as long as they have put together a quality team around him. I’m not saying the Chiefs can’t get to the Super Bowl, but if they do, don’t expect Smith to take home MVP honors.

“Can’t rely on him to win you one either” – LOAD OF BULLSHIT!
He dusted the Saints with ONE good TE and a handful of half ass WR’s, behind an O-line that ranked dead last in pass protection!
In games that he has had good protection (time to throw the ball) he has been top 10 easy.
NO QB CAN COMPLETE PASSES LAYING ON HIS BACK.
Smith has played behind some of the worst pass blockers in the NFL his entire career. You so called “sports analysts” either don’t know shit, or are simply writing what you are TOLD TO WRITE, which makes you what I have been calling you for years: Fascist Media Whores.

Well, when Alex Smith lost his job to Kaepernick- the niners went to the SB. Blow me.

      • Man

Go hang yourself you mindless debt slave.

        Hey Steven,

Don’t mind “man”, he’s that peculiar type of man, if you know what I mean.

        • Man

You: Another fag, talking out his cock sucker.

      • 7yahweh7

Yeah, and Kap CHOKED like I said he would. An elite defense and running game is no match for a dumb ass one read chump. How about that SB loss?

Smith was the #1 rated QB in the NFL in several categories when he was back stabbed. I guess you think Egobaugh is a genus huh?

You useless eaters are all the same. Can’t wait for Agenda 21 to wipe you useless MF’s off the planet. You’re wasting air.

Nice choke by your bf Alice Smith in the 4th quarter of the Colts game.

Once again, couldn’t get his guys in field goal position for the win.

Chiefs needed to start Daniels like I said.

      • Man

Of course, I mean, it’s obvious that Daniels would have kept Luck from throwing 4 TD’s in the 2nd half. He’s one of the best defenses In the NFL.

        • cecilhirvi

Daniels wouldn’t have spazzed out like your bf Alice did.

As a consolation prize, you can still make love to your A. Smith poster in your trailer all winter. :)

          • Man

Typical Communist debt slave: dumb as a rock.
Go back to the gay (bay) you mindless freak.

  • Tekelley22

    This article is shit.

    • Steven

You’re retarded if you think Alex Smith is going to beat Peyton Manning in the playoffs. 1 and done.

      • Tekelley22

You’re a bumbass. You have nothing better to do than troll? Get a life bro

      • cecilhirvi

        Steven,

        You are one smart dude.

  • UsnCapt2003

What a total nasty attack on one of the most classy players in the NFL. This guy has given it his all with no respect. Writers like you are a shame and to have a job that is supposed to be fair and unbiased to write this brings dishonor to your profession. Go kiss PFM’s ass some more and leave classy players like Alex alone

    • Steven

Nasty attack???!?!?!?!?!1 WOW. Hilarious. “Fair and unbiased” is boring as fuck. I happen to love sport fans opinions so go cry somewhere else. Alex Smith is classy, great. He isn’t going to beat Peyton Manning. Sit on one.

      • UsnCapt2003

You sir appear to be just another classless POS of whom I won’t waste my time on. Enjoy Peyton Choke Manning on their one and done

  • cecilhirvi

The answer is a resounding “NO”. Alice Smith had THE BEST DEFENSE and the BEST KICKER with the Niners in 2011 and could not, COULD NOT get ONE 3RD DOWN COMPLETION in the 2nd half against the Giants to get them into scoring range.

As for the playoff win against the Saints? The Saints defense coach publicly ADMITTED that they defended everyone EXCEPT Alice Smith during that game so all he had to do was run the ball for a TD.

Start Chase Daniels and the Chiefs will go farther in the playoffs.

    Nuff said. Sit down.

    • Man

Another dumb ass that can’t see the real game. Smith was throwing to who in game vs. the NYG? TWO PRACTICE SQUAD WR’s and Davis. The O-line in 2011 was ranked DEAD LAST in protection and they were playing TWO of the best pass rushers in the NFL. Oh yeah, and did I mention: SF LED THE NFL IN DROPS IN 2011?
Smith has learned more playbooks than your entire dumb ass Communist peasant family could learn in 40 years. He went to the playoffs throwing to a bunch of nobody WR’s that couldn’t keep a job on any other team, and YES, KC pass protection THIS YEAR, was ranked in the bottom of the NFL. Again: You’re a fkn DUMB ASS.
Bottom line? You’re fkn dumb ass. STFU and sit down, peasant.

      • cecilhirvi

Hey “Man” (u sure about that?)

I’m sorry I hurt your feelings. I didn’t realize you have dreams of sleeping with your Alice Smith someday.

Great game management there and intentional grounding by your bf, btw.

        Too bad he’s married, eh?

        • Man

CLEARLY you’re a fag, otherwise you wouldn’t be making so many fagish comments.

    • Man

I bet you blame Smith for luck throwing 4 TD’s in the 2nd half last night too huh? YEP
And it’s all his fault that 6 players were injured too huh?
You’re so fkn stupid I bet you can’t get laid without having to suck a dick first.
