Indianapolis Colts: Does Playing Kansas City Chiefs Mean A Deep Playoff Run?
History is starting to repeat itself for the Indianapolis Colts. This season seems a lot like the 2006 season when the Colts went 12-4 and won the AFC South en route to their lone Super Bowl while playing in Indianapolis. The team sputtered just past the halfway point in the season before catching fire when it counted towards the end of the year.
The offense and defense struggled at one point during the 2006 season before both starting to click in the final few games. That’s just like this year as Indianapolis’ offense is now at full throttle and the defense is playing lights-out while getting healthy.
Like that special season, the Colts will host the Kansas City Chiefs in the Wild Card round of the playoffs. That year, Indianapolis hosted the Chiefs at 4:30 p.m. ET on NBC and won 23-8. This year, the Colts host the Chiefs at 4:30 P.M. ET on NBC. And oh yeah, the Colts beat the Chiefs in Kansas City just two weeks ago 23-7.
That’s not the only similarity either. The Colts and Chiefs have played each other three times in the playoffs. All three times, the Colts have made it to at least the AFC Championship Game. In 1995, the Colts upset the Chiefs in Arrowhead 10-7 in the Divisional Round as Indianapolis advanced to play the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC title game.
In 2003, the Colts played in Arrowhead again in the Divisional Round and again won. This time it was a 38-31 victory to advance to play at the New England Patriots the next week. Of course, the Colts hosted Kansas City in 2006 which resulted in the Super Bowl-winning playoff run.
So, history is on Indianapolis’ side. They just have to put everything in place.
