New York Jets QB Geno Smith Makes Statement In Season Finale

Ed Mulholland-USA TODAY Sports

Two solid outings have brought hope for New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith. The highly-criticized rookie turned in one efficient performance in his team’s final game on Sunday. Smith completed 17-of-27 passes for 190 yards. Most importantly, he managed to not have any turnovers.

On several occasions, he stood tall in the pocket, delivering perfect strikes. This poise looked similar to when Gang Green got off to that surprising start. He also made better decisions even going through his progressions. When nothing was there, he pulled the ball down and ran. That is also another positive aspect of Sunday’s contest. Smith may not have thrown for a touchdown, but he scored with his legs.

Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg wisely took advantage of this athleticism. Many thought after Smith’s struggles this season that he is not the long-term answer. Three good games in four weeks do not change this discussion completely, but they do provide glimmers of hope.

Finishing at 8-8 puts Gang Green at a critical point. Improving on last season’s six wins is a start. GM John Idzik’s second offseason should be focused on getting this team back to playoff form. Upgrading with at least one star receiver helps this cause. Bringing in a veteran signal caller would help this team on two levels. Smith could use the guidance as he continues to develop. Also, he could use some competition, or at the very least an insurance policy.
