Chicago Bears Rumors: Julius Peppers Is As Good As Gone
The Chicago Bears will soon start to feel the lasting effects of signing Jay Cutler to a seven-year deal worth $54 million in guaranteed money. What I mean by that, is Bears general manager Phil Emery is going to have a very tough time keeping Chicago under the salary cap in the near future. Therefore, expect the Bears to have quite a few “cap casualties” this offseason — one of which should be an aging Julius Peppers.
Now, there used to be a time when Peppers struck fear into opposing offensive linemen, but now the watered-down No. 90 has reached his decline and Peppers is the first to admit it. Unfortunately, the Bears signed Peppers to such a large deal in 2010 that the team will now be forced to eat quite a bit of coin. In fact, if Emery decides to sever ties with Peppers like he should, then the Bears will gain $9.82 million of cap room by releasing Peppers after the season.
Surely, Chicago is an organization that would benefit from close to $10 million and this is a rather simple way of doing so. Another NFL team is sure to pick up Peppers this summer, but the defensive end hasn’t made many friends in the Windy City by taking many plays off and amassing just 7.5 sacks all season. Many NFL fans liken Peppers to Jevon Kearse, who known as “the freak” with the Tennessee Titans, but also hit his decline rather quickly. Building a team via free agency has it’s perks, but modern-day Peppers is a classic example of the troubles a team faces when signing a player to a massive contract.
