Houston Texans Would Be Crazy to Trade First Overall Pick
The Houston Texans have locked up their first overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft but according to several reports, they are considering moving down in the order. With the intention of getting more impact players on both sides of the ball, GM Rick Smith and owner Bob McNair told several sources that they might not use the selection and could explore options to trade down.
While the move is certainly tempting, the Texans would be absolutely crazy to actually do it just to get quantity over quality. Despite the fact that Houston lost 14 straight games this season to end with a 2-14 record, it’s not like the Texans don’t have talented players on their roster.
The organization features the likes of Andre Johnson and Arian Foster offensively and J.J. Watt defensively. With a puzzling QB situation, this seems like the perfect time for Houston to choose their signal-caller of the future.
Matt Schaub and Case Keenum aren’t the solution moving forward and if the Texans maintain their pick, they would have a plethora of players to pick from. Teddy Bridgewater, Johnny Manziel and Derek Carr all have enough merits to be picked first overall and while the draft class isn’t finalized yet, there’s clearly a lot of talent available and the Texans would have the honor of choosing any player they like.
Whether their pick will pan out is by no means a guarantee, but the Texans have a great chance they shouldn’t miss. Having all players available on the board is a luxury and if they choose correctly, 2014 could be a completely different year for the Texans.
