NFL Power Rankings: The 20 Teams That Didn’t Make the Playoffs
Power Ranking the 20 NFL Teams Who Didn't Make the Playoffs
The NFL regular season is over. With it, most football fans' hopes and dreams are crushed and they are forced to wait another long offseason until their team finally rises to the top. Or more accurately, fans are sitting around waiting to see which bone-headed coach their favorite team will hire this year to coach them to another losing season. Or, fans have hinged all their hopes upon which superstar their team will take with that high draft pick they fought so hard for all season (yes, I'm talking about you, Houston Texans). Even better, their team just barely missed the playoffs because multiple other teams didn’t do their job to help them in, and the fans still angry and blaming Roger Goodell for some reason (the Pittsburgh Steelers fans are a greedy bunch). No matter your current situation, the regular season has ended and it is now time to evaluate and analyze.
Since nobody ever gives any love to the teams who don’t make the playoffs, this power ranking does just that. This complete list of all 20 teams who missed the playoffs breaks down each team and gives a very brief summary of each loser. We will start with the teams who are just terrible and work our way up to the teams that just missed the playoffs and are the highest ranked. This will provide laughs or tears depending on who your favorite team is. But beware: if you’re reading this and your team is in the playoffs, you too may find your favorite on this dreaded list next year. So sit back and enjoy. Feel free to tinker with the rankings as you see fit.
20. Houston Texans
The Texans tie the Falcons for being the biggest underachiever this year. The Texans might have some hope at least they signed coach Bill O’Brien and have the first pick in the draft. Maybe the future is bright?
19. Atlanta Falcons
The Falcons underperformed this season to say the least. This team has the most offensive weapons of any team in the league, yet won only four games. I know Julio Jones got hurt but still, four wins?
18. Jacksonville Jaguars
The Jaguars are awful. They get this rank for not signing Tim Tebow just to sell tickets. It’s bad enough that the team is horrid -- they should try to at least make some money. Give the people what they want!
17. Washington Redskins
The Redskins are in a world of trouble. They were awful when everyone expected them to be good. Robert Griffin III is not the savior people hoped for and has done nothing but create turmoil around this team. They are without a coach, people want to change their name, and they lack talent everywhere. Sorry to say, but Kirk Cousins is a better NFL QB than their “stud”, RG3. Good luck.
16. Oakland Raiders
The Raiders stunk it up and have a dark, dark future. They too have no clear-cut quarterback and are wasting the talent of Darren McFadden. Just lose, baby -- that's right, it was all Al Davis' fault. What's the excuse now?
15. Cleveland Browns
The Browns are horrible. They need to figure something out before they get kicked out of the NFL. Even though they weren’t expected to win, they still surprise you. They never pick a QB and stick with him, or give a head coach a chance to win. There’s just no upside here.
14. Tampa Bay Bucs
The Bucs didn’t disappoint anyone this year. They weren’t supposed to be good and they weren’t. Even with all their injury/QB troubles, this team did what they were supposed to.
13. Minnesota Vikings
The Vikings weren’t expected to be good and they didn’t disappoint. Honestly, five wins is good for this team. They would have gotten a higher rank if Adrian Peterson did something special this season that made Vikings games watchable.
12. Buffalo Bills
The Bills are the Bills. They did as expected and settle nicely into their spot here. There's no upside here, but at least they tailgate like champs in Buffalo.
11. St. Louis Rams
For the Rams, this was a good season. Their fans won’t take any comfort in this, but they played better than expected. Now if only Tavon Austin could play every possession on both offense and defense.
10. Detroit Lions
The Lions performed terribly down the stretch. This team was 7-5, leading the division and controlled their own fate. They decided to lose their last four games and miss the playoffs with some of the biggest playmakers in the league on both sides of the ball. Seriously, it's like they decided they didn’t want to be in the playoffs this year.
9. Tennessee Titans
The Titans played better than expected, won some games they shouldn’t have and earned a little respect for at least showing up and trying. Chris Johnson is still fun to watch.
8. Miami Dolphins
The Dolphins were more of a reality show than a football team this year. Because of all their off-field issues clearly affecting their chemistry and potential, they lacked cohesion. This isn’t a bad team, but they played poorly when they needed to play well and they had a chance to do something special.
7. New York Jets
The Jets are just there. As usual, they don’t shock anyone. Yet again, they were average and didn’t cause too much drama this season. They’ll always be in the shadow of the Patriots, so get used to it.
6. New York Giants
The Giants started horribly and ended the season poorly. Eli Manning threw more interceptions than defenses knew what to do with. Drafting a new QB may be in the works. Either way, their regular season is over, and they find themselves on this list despite being expected to be in the playoffs every year.
5. Baltimore Ravens
The Ravens get a nice high rank for being an average team and not making the playoffs. Being 8-8 is good enough in some years, but not this year. Maybe you saw this coming when they overpaid Joe Flacco and had nothing left to build a team with.
The Steelers' only upside is LeVeon Bell, who has shown himself to be a beast. The problem, which proved too much to overcome this season, is the rest of the old and washed-up team. They need to make big moves this offseason.
3. Chicago Bears
They went 8-8 and weren’t anything special this year. They were an average team who didn’t play up to their potential. They had the weapons, but didn’t do enough with them to even make the playoffs.
2. Dallas Cowboys
Yet again, the Cowboys played average football all year long and did nothing to earn more than an average outcome. Even with the weapons they had on offense, this pitiful Cowboys team finds themselves on this list for under-utilizing the weapons they had. Most teams would die to have Demarco Murray, Dez Bryant and Jason Witten on their team.
1. Arizona Cardinals
The Cardinals are the team you have to feel bad for -- with 10 wins in a hard division, they should be in the playoffs. As it stands, however, all they can do is watch like the rest of us.
