Blake Bortles Entering 2014 NFL Draft Gives Jacksonville Jaguars Another Option At QB
The Jacksonville Jaguars have the third pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, and based on what happened this season all the signs are pointing to GM David Caldwell drafting a quarterback in the first round.
The current crop is headlined by Louisville’s Teddy Bridgewater – who would be the best option for the Jags going forward – but in case he is snapped by either the Houston Texans or the St. Louis Rams there are more options like Fresno State’s Derek Carr and possibly Texas A&M’s Johnny Manziel.
Another name has been added to that list as UCF’s Blake Bortles will reportedly enter the draft. While he is not a household name by any means, he would be a solid option to be the signal-caller of the future if he ends up with the Jaguars.
Bortles has seen his name rise up quickly in most prospect ranks and for good reason. He had some good numbers as a sophomore – 62.9 percent completion, 3.059 yards and 25 TD passes – but he improved every major statistic this year. The 6-foot-4, 230-pound quarterback finished the year completing almost 70 percent of this throws, throwing for 3581 yards to go along with 25 touchdowns and only nine interceptions. He also led UCF to a 12-1 record and a win over Baylor at the Fiesta Bowl where he put on a clinic of accuracy and technique.
His intriguing mix of size, mobility and accuracy will surely attract many teams around the NFL as most scouts believe he’s worthy of a top-three pick. The Jaguars will certainly go after Bridgewater, but if he’s not on the board when the Jags have to pick, Bortles could end up being a pick that pays huge dividends for the future of the franchise.
