Indianapolis Colts Get Huge Boost With Deion Branch Addition

Deion Branch Indianapolis Colts New England Patriots

Indianapolis, IN- The Indianapolis Colts have made rosters moves again, and these could make a big contribution to the team. The team signed wide receiver Deion Branch on Monday and put defensive end Fili Moala and cornerback Greg Toler on IR.

The two players going on IR really is no big deal.

Yes, Toler is a starter, but he’s been bad. He was injured for most of the season as he went out prior to the bye week and didn’t return until three weeks ago. In those three weeks, he was beat downfield a lot and failed to do a decent job in coverage. With the New England Patriots being the next opponent, the Colts need a corner who can play tight press coverage on the line of scrimmage, and Toler isn’t that guy.

As far as Moala, he’s not a starter and he too has been injured. He wasn’t likely going to get much playing time going forward as the Colts’ defensive line is getting healthy so that too isn’t a big loss.

The signing of Branch, however, is huge. The wide receiving group has really stepped their game up over the past mont,h and adding a veteran with Super Bowl experience like Branch is very beneficial.

None of the Colts’ receivers on the active roster really have any playoff experience other than last week. Both T.Y. Hilton and LaVon Brazill played in last year’s AFC Wild Card game, but neither one was leaned upon like they are now. The other two — Griff Whalen and Da’Rick Rogers — are in their first years of service, so adding a guy like Branch just adds depth to a very skilled position now and a voice of experience to look to on the field.

Now the Colts have Branch and Reggie Wayne to help coach these younger guys and give them guidance.

Branch worked out for the Colts in early December and most recently played for New England in 2012 where he caught 16 passes for 145 yards in 10 contests. The signing also helps as he is a former Super Bowl MVP for New England and knows all of their plays.

This could be another Super Bowl caliber move by Indianapolis.
